Fair Housing
The Fair Housing Act of 1968-Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as amended, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents or legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and handicap (disability).
Persons who feel they are experiencing any form of discrimination in housing the pursuit of housing in the Town of Amherst may call the Town’s Fair Housing Officer, Laurie Stillwell , Associate Planner, at (716) 631-7050. Assistance is also available to residents experiencing any form of discrimination in housing or employment through Housing Opportunities Made Equal (H.O.M.E) (716) 854-1400 or their website www.homeny.org or the Buffalo Office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development at (716) 551-5755 ext 5171.
Handicapped Accessibility
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits discrimination and ensures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment, State and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and transportation. It also mandates the establishment of TDD/telephone relay services. Section 504 provides that no qualified individual with a disability should, only by reason of his or her disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.
Assistance is provided in the Town of Amherst to Town residents and employees partaking of Town services and meetings in the form of language or sign interpreters available upon request, devices available for the hearing-impaired and TDD/telephone relay service. Handicapped accessible entranceways, elevators and restroom facilities are available in all Town buildings for visitors, residents and employees and in some cases car or home services are provided as reasonable accommodations by Town employees to those who otherwise would not be able to conduct business with the Town.
