Welcome From Chief Scott P. Chamberlin

I welcome you to the Amherst Police Department Web Site. Established in 1923, we are a New York State Accredited Agency comprised of 161 sworn officers and supported by 54 full and part-time civilian employees. Our mission is to provide a high level of safety and police services for the 131,000 residents of Amherst, the largest suburb of Buffalo, located in upstate Western New York. We also provide police services for the Village of Williamsville, which is located within the town boundaries.
We take a proactive approach to policing our community. In doing so, we emphasize efforts to reach out to, and partner with, our community as we work to resolve public safety concerns and quality of life issues that may arise. As a result, we have consistently been ranked as one of the safest communities in the country. This proud distinction has been achieved through the hard work and dedication of all our men and women, past and present, who commit themselves daily to serve their community in keeping with our core values of: Excellence, Integrity, Service, and Professionalism.
As Chief of Police, I am proud of the fine men and women who serve this wonderful community on behalf of the Amherst Police Department. Our ongoing commitment to you is that we will strive daily to be a model of excellence in policing, maintaining our partnerships with the community and local government to provide outstanding service. Please spend some time getting acquainted with the department that continues to be “Big enough to serve you but small enough to know you.”
Confidential Tip Line
The success of our mission has always been dependent on the public’s willingness to become involved. Our officers, despite being highly trained and motivated, still need your assistance. If you have information which you feel may pertain to a crime or other public safety issue, we urge you to report it. You can do this either by directly calling the department’s main phones or by utilizing one of the tip lines listed below. Often a seemingly unimportant or minor piece of information can solve a crime, or save a life.
