Clerk To Town Justice (Full Time)
Town Court
The Amherst Town Court is looking to fill the position of Clerk to the Town Justices. The Court seeks a dynamic self-starter who will be able to work with Town Town Justices. Strong writing skills a plus.
Description of Duties
- Assigns work, schedules completion dates, trains and supervises subordinate staff;
- Develops work standards and spot checks for compliance with instructions and procedures;
- Responds to inquiries from other courts, government agencies, and attorneys concerning court procedures;
- Prepares court calendar and schedules cases;
- Annotates court calendars;
- Prepares orders, forms and statistical reports;
- Composes letters and responses to written inquiries for signature of judge;
- Takes jurors attendance, polls jurors, swears jurors and witnesses, and retains custody of exhibits;
- Records receipt of fees, fines, and bail money, checks figures, balances cash books, deposits receipts, maintains bank account, reconciles bank statements, and prepares accounting reports:
- Maintains records of expenditures and posts expenditures by account codes;
- Reconciles expenditures with expenditure reports and encumberance statements;
- Accepts forms, such as Notes of Issue, Jury Demands, and Parking tickets, delivered by mail or in person, reviews forms and instruments for accuracy and compliance with established procedures;
- Assists justices in the preparation of budget and personnel transactions and purchasing;
- Prepares requisitions and maintains stock of office supplies;
- Computes jurors fees and employee overtime, and prepares travel vouchers;
- Prepares requests for Town/Village Board approval of travel expenditures;
- Annotates docket or minutes books after court appearances;
- Classifies documents to be filled in accordance with the guidelines of an established filing system;
- May perform incidental typing of record cards, envelopes and forms;
- Acts in an advisory capacity for citizens on small claims, civil matters and most other areas in relation to court procedures;
- Prepares papers relative to civil matters and issues same for proper service.

Qualifications
Civil Service Examination may be required.
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, supplemented by or including typing and two (2) years experience in a business office or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full time experience requirement.
