Recycling Policy Update
Modern had issued a letter stating that it was no longer accepting plastic bags or colored glass. The Supervisor had discussions with Modern regarding our contract. As a result, Amherst residents may continue to recycle plastic bags, colored glass and items with a #6 triangle.

Open House at Amherst Senior Center!
The Amherst Center for Senior Services will host their annual Open House on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 from 9:00 am – 12 noon. This free event will include tours of the center, a meet & greet with Senior Center staff, ask the social worker session and a continental breakfast on the patio. There will also be displays of Center clubs and classes. Individuals who join the Center on the day of the open house and current members who bring a friend to join will receive a voucher for a free lunch.

Road Work - Youngs Rd.
The Amherst Highway Department will be performing road construction (milling and repaving) on Youngs Road between Maple Road and Sheridan Drive starting on July 9, 2015. The overall project will be on-going for approximately 1 week. There will be traffic restrictions, road closures and detours in the northbound direction during this work between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Residents are asked to use caution when traveling in this area both for their safety and the safety of the workers. If residents have any questions please email jspeth@amherst.ny.us

Flea Market at Amherst Senior Center: July 18
The Amherst Center for Senior Services will be accepting items in good condition for its Flea Market beginning Monday, July 13 through Thursday, July 16, between the hours of 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. Items can be delivered to the Main Entrance of the Center and receipts for tax purposes will be given upon request. No clothing will be accepted. The Flea Market will take place on Saturday, July 18 from 9:00 am – 12 noon at the Amherst Center for Senior Services. All proceeds from the Flea Market benefit the Center’s programs, services and activities.

New Library at Center Seeks Donations
The new Library at the Amherst Senior Center is seeking books in languages other than English. If you have any books, magazines or music, that you are willing to donate to the library they would be greatly appreciated. We would like to have one section in the library dedicated to the rich cultures which make up our Center membership. Donations may be dropped off at the Center during regular hours.

Pajama Project Underway at Senior Center
The Amherst Center for Senior Services is partnering with the Pajama Project which provides new pajamas and new books to children in need nationwide, many of whom are waiting to be adopted. During August and September, the Amherst Senior Center will be accepting donations of new, unused pajamas (any size) and books. These donations will be sent to a local chapter in the Buffalo area.

2015 Agricultural District Open Enrollmment
The Erie County Legislature designated September1 through September 30 each year as the annual thirty-day period during which a landowner may request the inclusion of predominantly viable agricultural land into a certified agricultural district in accordance with Section 303-b of New York State Agricultural and Markets Law. Landowners interested in agricultural assessment and land protections may also be interested in enrolling in an agricultural district at this time.

Family 5K Running Program
This six week running program is for beginner adult runners and their kids! It is one that uses walk/run to slowly, yet effectively get you ready to run a 5K race (3.1 miles) in six short weeks. Group meets twice per week at the Amherst Bike Path on North Forest near tennis courts Monday evenings, 6:15pm-7:45pm and Saturday mornings 9:30am-11am beginning October 5. Winter Recess Camp registration for children ages 5-11 is now taking place. Camp will be held December 28-30 at the Williamsville Youth Center, 5005 Sheridan Drive. Registration fee for Amherst residents is $5/day. Camp fee is $35/day per child or $30/day per child for additional children in a family. Nonresidents pay $50/day per child. NYS Carbon Monoxide Law for all Commercial Bldgs
These provisions are found in section 1228.4 of Title 19 of New York Codes and Regulations (NYCRR). Transition period for Existing Commercial Buildings to comply: June 27, 2015 to June 27, 2016. During this transition period, the owner of the building must provide the AHJ with a written statement certifying that the owner is attempting in good faith to install carbon monoxide detection as quickly as practicable and will be completed by the end of the transition period.

Sounds of the Seasons
The Amherst Center for Senior Services will host the SOUNDS OF THE SEASON featuring “Serendipity Swing” on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm. This “Little Big Band” is an eight-musician ensemble plus a female vocalist from Buffalo, New York, that reflects a musical style from an era of famous dance halls, glamorous ballrooms and classy supper clubs. Dinner will be served from 5:00 – 6:30 pm and the menu is Roast Beef on Kimmelwick, horseradish, potato salad, green beans, brownie and coffee/tea. The meal cost is $5.00 and a sandwich only is $3.00. Payment is due the evening of the event and reservations are preferred by calling 636-3055 extension 3108. Walk ins are welcome.

Be A Santa to a Senior
The Amherst Center for Senior Services has joined with Home Instead Senior Care of Williamsville to coordinate a Be a Santa to a Senior® program. The Amherst Center for Senior Services has provided the names of 55 seniors in need through our Senior Outreach Services (SOS), Amherst Meals on Wheels (AMOW) and Amherst Adult Day Care programs. Their names and wish items have been placed on Be a Santa to a Senior® tags and those tags are on the tree located in the front foyer at The Amherst Senior Center. Members and the public are encouraged to take a tag and purchase a gift. All gifts must be delivered "unwrapped" to the Amherst Center for Senior Services by December 14, 2015.

Community Development Draft Annual Action Plan
Town of Amherst Community Development uses U. S. Department of HUD Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnership Grant (HOME) funding for programs. Attached is the Draft 2016 Annual Action Plan, covering the 2016 fiscal year (April 1, 2016 – March 31, 2017). The draft Plan will also be available in local libraries, Town Clerk’s Office, and Village of Williamsville Clerk’s Office, beginning Tuesday, December 15, 2015. A second public hearing to accept comments on the proposed budget and Annual Action Plan has been scheduled for January 19, 2016 at the Town Board meeting.

Resident ID Cards
Amherst Youth & Recreation photo ID cards for the 2016 calendar year are now on sale. A valid ID card is needed to register for programs and services and to receive resident discounts for open skate sessions. Proof of residency and a new photo, taken at time of registration are required. Parents, please bring your child's old ID card or birth certificate. Cards can be purchased only at the Youth & Recreation Department office, Northtown Center at Amherst, 1615 Amherst Manor Drive. Cost is $5 per person. Christmas Tree Pickup
The Town of Amherst Highway Department will begin picking up Christmas trees starting on January 4, 2016 and will conclude pickup on January 15, 2016. From January 18, 2016 on trees should be put out with your weekly garbage. Residents are reminded that trees must be free of tinsel, garland or any other materials.
