Supervisor's June Message
Words matter. As I sat down to write this month’s column, I knew I had to address the recent massacres in Buffalo and Texas. I continue to pray for the victims and their families, and as I do, I thought, what can I say that hasn’t been said? And as I thought more, I found myself thinking: what has been said that should never have been said? What we say, what we mean, what we teach is important. The words we choose matter. This violence needs to end.

Water Treatment Plant ongoing project 2022
The Water Treatment Plant has been undergoing numerous updates throughout the facility. The current project may create some additional noise during the early morning and possible odors. The early morning start time is coordinated to take advantage of "Low Flow" conditions that will allow us to complete the project safely and have very little effect on the town residence. Beginning on Tuesday August 16th at approximately 2:30 AM, you may hear pumps running and continue to run throughout the day. The pumps are necessary to complete the project as well as dry weather conditions. If we don't have the correct conditions we will be forced to set another date unknown at this time. Your patience is appreciated as we try to move forward with very little disruption to our local neighbors. Thank you

Update - September 2022
The Treatment Plant staff and management are aware of the odor complaints coming in from the subdivisions west and south of the facility. In most instances (65%), the prevailing wind pattern is from southwest to northeast pushing any odors that emanate from the treatment plant away from your homes. However, during certain meteorological events (winds out of the north or east, low heavy overcast conditions with moisture laden air and calm winds) your subdivision may experience odors. In most cases, odor is generated when the facility dewaters the sludge prior to offsite disposal. That operation begins on Sunday, second shift and goes to first shift Friday, every week. Sludge boxes are filled onsite and staged in a newly constructed storage building prior to being trucked for disposal. In addition, odor can be generated by a sustained dry period, followed by wet weather conditions which wash settled septic sludge to the plant through the interceptor system. The facility has installed and maintains several systems to treat odors from the odor generating sources. Additionally, the facility is looking to improve its odor control systems and will be starting a study within a month or so to determine the effectiveness of the systems. Also, we will be reviewing the sanitary sewer system in your neighborhood to make sure that the odors are not emanating from the manholes within the subdivision.

The Town honors Purple Heart recipients, as more than a million military personnel have been killed and millions more have been wounded in combat defending the principles and freedoms of the United States of America. The mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to honor those who were killed during wartime, foster an environment of goodwill among combat wounded members and their families, promote patriotism, support legislative initiatives and to never forget the many decorated soldiers and veterans including Purple Heart recipients.

DRIVERS ASKED TO PLEASE STAY OFF ROADS IN TOWN OF AMHERST TO ASSIST EMERGENCY RESPONDERS
The Town of Amherst driving ban remains in place today, Sunday, December 25, 2022, as town crews tackle storm clean up. “Please stay off the roads today. This is still a hazardous situation. I understand it is Christmas and we have been stuck in our current locations for days, but to best assist emergency response, please stay off the roads. We are looking at extensive cleanup here in Amherst. Many side roads are impassable and you will get stuck if you attempt to drive on them and will add to the issues. Residents need to understand the magnitude of this storm and complications we are facing. Secondary roads won’t be plowed immediately due to multiple obstacles. First and foremost, emergency crews, and the necessary equipment needed, are still answering urgent calls for assistance. To allow them to help others, stay off the roads. Drivers who disobey the driving ban will be ticketed,” said Supervisor Brian Kulpa. Additionally, residents who are cleaning up their driveways are reminded to not put snow in the roadways, and to please be mindful of their own health as they are moving an historic amount of snow fall.

STORM CLEANUP UPDATE
The Town of Amherst’s state of emergency and driving ban remain in place today, Monday, December 26, 2022, as town crews continue to tackle massive storm clean up. Roads that have been cleared are for emergency vehicle use only and residents need to stay off these routes. Most of the main roads have been addressed, and the Highway Department expects to reach 95 percent of town roads by the end of the day. That is dependent on several conditions, including the current weather forecast and abandoned cars. The Town has secured and dispatched additional high lifts for the town’s secondary streets because plows can’t handle the conditions on those streets. At this time, the Town plans to announce an update on the driving ban this evening. However, even after the driving ban is lifted, a 24-hour parking ban will be in place throughout the town until further notice. Additional information will be provided later today. .... For complete update, please see attached
