Your sanitary sewer system is very much like your water heater - you don't think about it much, until it stops working. Sewers are often taken for granted - out of sight, out of mind.
If you have a sewer backup or suspect a blockage outside your house, call our Sewer Maintenance Division First at (716) 631-7157 or (716) 691-9771 ext 8015, after normal business hours.
As a service, a crew will check to see if the backup is in the Town’s main, and if it is, clear the blockage. However, if the blockage is in the lateral serving the residence or business, it is the resident's/business owners responsibility to clear any blockage in the lateral line, which connects their property to the Town sewer main. Several professional sewer maintenance and plumbing companies can be found in the phone book to accomplish this work. A list of plumbers licensed to do work in the Town of Amherst can also be obtained through the Town of Amherst Building Department. We recommend requesting 2 or 3 estimates from reputable plumbing companies for any major sewer repair projects.

Short term, localized odor impacts at treatment plant
The treatment plant's solids handling equipment is out of service and due to be repaired during the week of 4/22. As such, sludge processing and disposal is not occurring which will increase localized odors. Once the equipment is repaired, estimated to be Friday, 4/26, the plant will take at least a week to get back to normal operation.
